Winter Sleeps
Samia Ahmed
After some time, Summer has awaken.
Winter cries.
It googlies prepares itself for the next few months.
Winter’s tears reach the Earth.
Summer takes a brief nap.
Winter’s sneezes hit Earth and makes her shiver.
Summer pounces away and frees Earth from the Summer’s rule.
Winter sobs.
Summer melts the solid white puffs of tears into water.
Winter sneezes more.
Summer slows winter’s winds and warms it slightly.
Winter sighs, asking Summer for more time.
Summer beams brighter on Earth,
Winter begs Summer.
Summer stretches.
Winter yawns.
Summer says farewell to its only friend.

It’s that time of year again, we’re finally going down the rollercoaster of the school year. For you freshman, the year is now smooth sailing from here. Soon, we will face the Final Crunch of the school year and end the year. To me, it sounds somewhat sad. Granted, I would love another break (and I wouldn’t be the only one) but this time of year is a small reminder that another year is almost at an end.
This time of year has it advantages. For example, we can finally use our lockers without our jackets taking up 90% of space. Also, at this time of year, we get cheaper electricity bills. (My mom likes that.) At this time, you can start dreaming about vacations to go on and things to do this summer.
Now, staying after school won’t be as unsettling as it was in December, with the help of daylight savings time. Since the northern hemisphere will be tilted towards to the sun in a steep angle, which causes it to have longer, hotter days, it won’t be dark when you go home from after school.

SUMMER BREAK IS ALMOST HERE
An anonymous sophomore joked that, “I plan on watching a year’s worth of Netflix on two weeks.” He also said that, “I believe in this time of year, a lot students become laid back, since we had a lot of three day weekends, and Spring Break. The break was well-needed, since teachers were shoving assignments and evidences down our throats.”
I don’t think I will be the only sophomore who watch Netflix, but I, being the studious person I am, plan volunteering a little bit and participating in a few pre-college programs during the summer. I don’t believe I will be the only one. According to an anonymous junior, “I plan on going on a roadtrip with my family to my cousins down in Florida for two weeks. After that, I am going on a 5 week trip to University of Wisconsin-Madison.” |
A disadvantage for this time of year is that most students tend to become numb. I hear it from all around the school.
I want to go back to bed. I don’t feel like doing on my Spanish homework. In just x minutes, I can go to bed. I relate with those people indeed, but it isn’t a good idea to keep these thoughts so close to the end of the school year. I know it is hard, but some time soon, we will all leave this winter gloom for the summer bloom. |
