We sing for cheer Hope for a prosperous new year But what nobody will do is acknowledge the problem Which is that you are still you And you will always be We all celebrate for a couple of days And go soon back the the familiar haze You make promises and resolutions of how to be a better you When the truth is you won't You won’t do most of these things intentionally The first few days you go to the gym Quit four weeks later and now what? Nobody realizes that the life lessons learned are unintentional With every heartbreak And every test failed And every single mistake You will never plan for these things to happen Then it does and it will be what makes you better It will be what makes you who you will be tomorrow Not some random goal |
Drip drip drip Pitter pitter patter patter Wet, damp, moist Not quite snowy as rainy, But that’s quintessential in the cheese state She always loved the sounds Rain, sometimes even snow Pitter pitter patter patter Wet, damp, moist She loved it so She dreamed of a white Christmas But, not just with snow Come January 1st, she’d be a piece of paper Blank, fresh, white, new It was always fun to start again But for New Year’s it felt more official With the new year approaching, New beginnings and opportunities, How could she be down? Winter is the time to be. To become, to change, to turn that frown upside down |

Oh, the new year With parties and such Just right after Christmas You’d think it would be too much But no, people feast and party again But the new year that is to come shall be full of regrets And New Year’s resolutions that will never be met It could also be filled with laughter and joy It can be full of good times and bad times A new year happens all of the time Resolutions will be made Resolutions will be broken People will die and children will be born New connections will be made and some may be broken Some things are said and some are left unspoken But no matter how you spend your time making up for things done the year before Look to the future, where new things await It may not seem to always matter What people will do or plan to do in the next year to come Or what has been done in the year before But decisions can be sometimes life changing And can be made in a flash Can change you for the better or can change you for the worst But no matter what you decide now or even if you ask “Why does this matter?” Well, the new year is just right around the corner |
The snow begins to settle in the leaves are no longer present everyone is wrapped and bundled, and the year is at it’s end. Another year is archived, and a new year broken free as we begin to ask ourselves: Who will I become? Who will I be? Will I make new friends this year? What if I don’t succeed? Who will I end this year with? Who will I be? Hopes, intentions, and resolutions return for the annual routine to predict the year approaching soon to assume all the events in between. We ask ourselves these questions to scour for who we’ll become but in the end, we can never plan what exactly is to come. |
DESTINATION OF THE MONTH:
THE SAFE HOUSE
WRITTEN & PHOTOGRAPHED BY KATIE GILLINGHAM
I must admit, I am sworn to secrecy on many topics of International Exports, Ltd, a very upbeat, family-friendly, spy-themed restaurant located downtown at 779 North Front Street. I must tell you, there is a password to enter. Email me @ [email protected] if you are in need of entrance to International Exports Ltd, for I am not permitted to give it away publicly. I will tell you though, the password is somewhere for you to see, and if you don’t know the password you will be required to do something on camera for the entire restaurant to see. International Exports Ltd. is open at 5:00 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays, and at 11:30 a.m. the rest of the week.
One of my favorite sandwiches is the Man From Havana; it’s very fresh and incredibly delicious. As a spy-themed restaurant, you are actually “sent on missions” that show you some history and funky perks of the restaurant. The entire layout is divided into sections, which if you decide to fulfill the missions, you can ask the staff for a map.
If visiting for the first time, do not question your GPS. You will find a red door, with a plaque for International Exports Ltd. Yes, this is actually the right entrance. Upon entering, you’ll enter a small room to meet a woman, Ms. M., behind a desk. This is where you will give her the correct password (again, email me at [email protected]). That is all I will tell you for now. If you need a safe house, you know where to go.
