Hardcore Henry Review
WRITTEN BY SAM PERGOLSKI
Husky Howls: 8.5 out 10
Rated R: For Mature Viewers Beware, this is an extremely violent movie. WATCH AT YOUR OWN RISK! “Hardcore Henry” is an over the top action movie that takes place in a sci-fi Russian setting. The main character, Henry, wakes up in the middle of a lab without and memory of his past or how he got to where he is. This whole idea is temporarily ignored when he soon realizes that many of his limbs are missing from his body. These are then replaced with cybernetic augments to make him a super soldier. Roughly five minutes into the movie, a military group raids the base in order to take Henry and use him as their own fighter. Henry and his wife, who brought him back to full health escape, as they soon find themselves on a busy Russian highway. This sets up the extreme action that is to come later on in the movie. “Hardcore Henry” delivers a new look on the action movie genre as it takes place entirely in first person. Luckily the camera isn’t too shaky and is very tolerable, even for the light headed. The whole movie is an extreme ride, pretty much starting with action in the first couple minutes of the movie. Now, as fun as the fight scenes are to watch, they can be very brutal and are meant to be taken as a joke and not in a serious matter. The gore levels are intensified to the maximum, as it never seems to have any slow parts for a time longer than ten minutes. |
This is a great movie for the people out there who just want to have a good time. For those of you who get queasy when looking at blood beware because, this movie is full of it. Like I had said in the small summary, “Hardcore Henry” takes the viewer across a close future Russia, where there are many different setting shown such as forests, skyscrapers, urban urban areas, and many more.
The final point that really seemed to make this movie shine was its characters. One character in particular Jimmy (played by Sharlto Copley), had many different personalities throughout allowing his character to become very unique and quite funny, which made him the main source of lightening up the movie when it starts to become a bit too dark. For those who are looking for an action movie with a meaty story, this is not your kind of movie. There are very little times when characters actually talk and spit out extra exposition. This means that you don’t that much of an idea of what’s happening within the movie. Another very important thing that and drive someone away from this movie is its extreme gore factor. At one point in the movie, Henry has to chase a man across many different areas to get some valuable information, and when he finally reaches him, a sniper takes the man’s head clean off. One couple even decided to get up and leave nearly ten minutes into the movie because of some of its content. Obviously, if this kind of stuff does not bother you, then you do not need to worry about. After seeing this movie I took some time to make a reasonable rating that I think the movie deserves overall. With that said, due to “Hardcore Henry’s” extremely fun action and interesting characters and settings, I have to give this movie an 8.5 out of 10 Husky Howls. |
Reagan IB Visual Arts Gallery Night
WRITTEN BY MARC CRUZ
Gallery Night is an exhibition setting for junior and senior IB Visual Art students, as it is open for the public, students, parents, and residents who are able to view the diverse artwork created by the students in the art course. This year will be its 9th annual night.
There have been 3,000 invitations sent out with the expectation of over 1,000 guests who will attend. Several colleges and universities such as Cardinal Stritch University, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, and Edgewood College are among those who are expected to attend. This is helpful for the art students, as administrators will be looking for possible enrollments. Attendees can expect to see a collection of around 900 to 1,200 artworks created by the Visual Art juniors and seniors presented through 73 display cases on the first floor at Reagan. There is a wide range of mediums ranging from painting, sculpting, digital art, printmaking, and many more. The student artists will be present to discuss their work with the public and possible college administrators. Visitors can browse through the gallery while also enjoying live music from the Reagan Music department, free admission, and free food . “It's great being so young but having your art shown to the public, because it really helps in making a name for yourself,” said junior Stella Wensing. Stella says that it can really help in obtaining scholarships and getting noticed by art schools. She adds that it's a great opportunity for art students to get some curatorial experience as well as learn social skills. There's a chance that art schools will remember your name and remember your work which helps with students who apply to them. |
“Gallery night leaves an impression on not just the Reagan community, but the whole area as a public event. It really puts us in standing with high schools whose main focus is art, such as MHSA, because every year we get such a huge turnout and this year shouldn't be any different. We have some amazingly talented artists in our midst and it's very valuable to be able to collaborate and take in all the different styles and skills of IB art students,” she concluded.
Senior Yuliana Ruiz Marquez has stated, "It's amazing to see how far all of us have come with our work. Project by project, it doesn't feel like much, but seeing it all come together, I am incredibly proud of all my classmates and I have accomplished. All the hard work and dedication put forth by our graduating class and the juniors will be showcased. Chad has worked endlessly to ensure our success, and I am certain we will see extraordinary results this gallery night." “This isn’t the only show our art gets shown in, thanks to Mr. Chad and Ms. Milewski, but it’s definitely the biggest, and it’s great that this happens in our own school. I’ve been to other high school art shows, even IB art shows, and none of them are anywhere near as large and successful as Reagan’s,” said junior Emma Duffy. “There’s so many colleges and important people from the art field there, and it’s great to get so much exposure to them so soon,” continued. In conclusion, Emma said, “Right now it feels very intimidating to have my own work up there, but it’s so much easier doing it in my own school where I feel comfortable, rather than leaving it in some random gallery, and I think that leaves a strong impression on the college reps coming to see it; we’re getting them to come seek us out rather than vying for their attention.” |

The 5th wave Movie review
WRITTEN BY ALEXIS TORRES
Score: ★★★ HOWLS
To start off, "The 5th Wave" was literally earth shattering because it shows the reality of new possibilities and how society could have to adapt and regenerate. The movie was about how the earth was “taken over” by what they call- "The Others."
The 1st wave knocked out the electricity and anything needing batteries.
The 2nd wave brought on an earthquake, which led to the 3rd wave of a major downpour/ breaking of the dam that flooded the area they were living in.
The 4th wave brought a virus killing basically everyone including the leading kids' parents.
The 5th wave was the Others looking like humans having the means to blend into society without any detection.
It is going to be hard to give an honest review without spoiling the entire movie. But who cares, because it’s already at the budget. For me, as a reporter and a critic, I was able to point out the confusing, bad, and good parts of the movie. Now if you haven’t seen this movie, you probably won’t know the main characters.
Cassie is the 1st character one should care about. She is basically explaining the story of how it all happened through her perspective. She is about 17, lost both her parents- her mother to the virus and then her father died due to being shot up by the military. Her only family left is her younger brother Sammie and she is determined to get him back from the military. Side note: she has/had a crush on Ben.
Ben is another important character. Before the waves occurred, he and Cassie attended school together. After losing his parents and sister because of the virus, he joined the military and became a captain of a unit. (The military took it upon itself to collect all the children and train them as if they were Navy Seals.) Also known as Zombie, he is the one to figure out the truth of who, the others really are.
Evan is most likely in his mid to late 20’s and ends up taking a special interest in Cassie after trying to target her but ending up developing emotions and feelings for her. Towards the middle of the movie he admits to being half other half human.
Sammie is close to 7-9 year old boy, who is Cassie’s brother.
The movie seemed like a big cliche because...
And the ending wasn’t very good. They make this big explosion happen and say they are going to try and save the rest of the kids. It ends with them eating beans with one girl eyeing Cassie because Ben is looking at her all sweetly. There better be a sequel otherwise that was a chilling ending no one can recover from.

The movie seemed like a big cliche because...
- it has a love interest spark from two characters (Cassie and Evan) who are not nearly close in age, and they hardly know each other, and one liking another (Cassie likes Ben) before they accidentally get close for even a second.
- they train kids like assassins.
- they have the military actually be The Others - if a viewer in the theater can predict that it was them right off the bat then it wasn’t much of a twist!
