Dear Nancy
Dear Nancy,
I’m a junior and I’m going Full IB so I have to write this 4,000 word essay called the Extended Essay. I’m struggling a lot with picking a subject, a topic, a supervisor and honestly just everything. I was wondering if you had any tips on how to go about the Extended Essay.

Dear Anonymous Student,
The beginning of junior year can be stressful for a Full IB student. You’re introduced to so much, a lot of things are new to you, but not only are these things new to you but all the other Full IB juniors as well. Whether it’s the transition for the MYP program to the DP program, IB testing or even the start of the Extended Essay, people are here to support you.
You’re concerned about the start of the Extended Essay, which is really common for students going the Full IB route and I’m here to help provide you with some tips on how to go about the Extended Essay or EE.
First off you must select a subject to begin. You have a variety of options when selecting a subject. Here are some tips that might help you select a subject:
Once your subject is chosen you have to begin to find a topic you want to work with within your subject area. Tips on choosing a topic:
After all of that you have to choose a supervisor that will help you throughout the entire year. Some tips on choosing a supervisor:
I hope that this has help you along with others who had the same question but were scared to ask. I know it seems like a lot, but with some planning you will be able to develop a well thought out and organized paper that will help you get you IB diploma. You got this! If you have anymore questions regarding the Extended Essay or anything about school don’t be scared to ask those around you. Specific questions regarding the Extended Essay can be addressed to Mr. Dillman in room 102.
Sincerely,
Nancy

First off you must select a subject to begin. You have a variety of options when selecting a subject. Here are some tips that might help you select a subject:
- Choose a subject that’s offered at Reagan so that you can get the best possible help.
- For example, psychology is offered at Reagan whereas culinary arts is not.
- Choose a subject that you’re interested in.
- Don’t choose a subject just because your friend is doing it!!!
Once your subject is chosen you have to begin to find a topic you want to work with within your subject area. Tips on choosing a topic:
- When working on finding a topic, narrow it down to three very broad topics
- Then go into more specifics on the three topics.
- Once you’re done with narrowing down topics, find what interests you the most and something that you won’t get tired of, because remember you’re writing 4,000 words on this topic.
- Find a topic that has research but not to much because you have to write your own research question and answer it with your research findings.
After all of that you have to choose a supervisor that will help you throughout the entire year. Some tips on choosing a supervisor:
- Choose someone who you can count on.
- Make sure you have a good relationship with your supervisor.
- Try finding a supervisor who has a background with the subject or topic area you have selected — this will benefit you in the long run.
- A lot of the time people choose supervisors that have like 10+ kids. Be careful when doing this because you want to do what’s best for you and if they have nine other kids, you may have to worry about how much one on one time that leaves you.
I hope that this has help you along with others who had the same question but were scared to ask.
